History and tradition

Zygovisti has deep historical roots. Its first inhabitants were the Kontogiannis family, who settled here at the end of the 16th century, seeking refuge from the Ottoman forces. The village holds an exceptional place in the history of the Greek Revolution of 1821: its men served as bodyguards of Theodoros Kolokotronis, known by the honorary name of the “Immortal Corps”. In honour of their sacrifice, the central square of the village is called Athanaton (Immortals’) Square and is adorned with a marble monument. For more historical information, you can visit the Zygovisti page on Wikipedia.

Notable buildings and monuments

Zygovisti has been officially designated a traditional settlement by the competent authorities, in recognition of its architectural and cultural value. Among its notable buildings is the Kapodistrian School, which operated as a school until 1957 and is now a listed monument. The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour is also an important religious and architectural landmark of the village, while the former primary school bears witness to the social life of earlier times.

Hospitality and community

Although the permanent population of the village is small today, the community of Zygovisti remains lively and active. Friends living away from the village and descendants of the old villagers come together every year to celebrate their traditions, keep the memory of their ancestors alive and showcase the beauty of this place. Every visit to Zygovisti leaves a lasting impression — the peace of the mountain, the clean air of Mainalo and the warmth of its people make this village special.
